Understanding ASTM Pool Fence Requirements for Your Installation

Do I Need to Install My Pool Fence to Meet ASTM Standards?

When researching pool safety options, you may come across ASTM compliance requirements. ASTM International (formerly known as the American Society for Testing and Materials) sets safety standards for many products — including removable mesh pool fencing under ASTM F2286.

But do you have to follow these standards when installing a pool fence? The answer: It depends.

Not Everyone Is Required to Install to ASTM Standards

In most residential situations, there is no legal requirement to install your fence according to ASTM F2286.

If you’re a homeowner adding protection for your children, grandchildren, or pets, ASTM compliance is often not required — although it remains a trusted benchmark for safety.

When ASTM Compliance Is Required

Some situations may require a pool barrier that complies with ASTM F2286:

  • Local building codes or ordinances
  • As a condition for passing a final inspection
  • Homeowners’ association (HOA) rules
  • Daycare, adoption, or foster care licensing
  • Insurance policy requirements

What Makes a Fence ASTM Compliant?

1. ASTM-Approved Materials

The pool fence materials must be tested and verified by an accredited lab to meet the performance and design standards set by ASTM F2286.
Good news: All-Safe mesh pool fencing meets or exceeds ASTM F2286 requirements.

2. ASTM-Compliant Installation

This includes how the fence is installed — height, pole spacing, gate hardware, gap sizes, and more — must follow ASTM guidelines.
❗This part is the responsibility of the installer, whether that’s you (DIY) or a professional reseller.

Even with ASTM-approved materials, an improper installation can result in non-compliance and failure to pass inspection.

What Does an ASTM-Compliant Installation Involve?

To meet the ASTM F2286 standard for removable mesh pool fencing, installation must follow specific guidelines that include:

  • Minimum fence height – 4 feet (48 inches) minimum, though local codes may require 5 feet (60 inches)
  • Pole spacing – Maximum of 40 inches between support poles
  • Bottom clearance – The fence must be no more than 1 inch above the surface (grade)
  • No gaps: The fence must not allow a 4-inch sphere to pass through at any point
  • Gates – Must be self-closing, self-latching, and open away from the pool
  • Latch height – Latch must be installed at least 54 inches from the ground, or be otherwise child-proof
  • Non-climbable design – No handholds or footholds that a child could use to climb over the barrier
  • 20-inch clearance: A clear zone between the pool edge and fence is recommended

Note: These requirements are minimums — your local jurisdiction may impose stricter rules.

Always Check Local Requirements First

Before installing your fence, we recommend checking with your:

  • Local building department or safety authority
  • Inspector or agency responsible for approving the project

Key questions to ask:

  • What height is required? (4 ft vs 5 ft)
  • Will a mesh fence be accepted?
  • Asking whether the fence will be inspected, and by whom

Still unsure what your city or inspector will require?

No Installation Is Guaranteed to Pass Inspection

Even with ASTM-compliant materials and careful installation, final approval is up to your local authority. Code interpretation varies widely — what passes in one city may not in another.

Color Variations

Colors on your screen or brochure may not match the actual color of your product.

Due to the many variations in monitors, phones, and browsers, color samples and product examples may appear different on different screens. Computers and mobile devices are not all calibrated equally and color reproduction on the Internet is not precise. The same is true for printed items such as brochures and other sales literature.

In addition, the colors of our products photograph differently under different lighting conditions. For example, photos taken in full sunlight will vary from photos taken on a cloudy or overcast day. Similarly, shadows from nearby objects can affect the color and transparency of our products. If a precise color or specific shade is important, please inspect the actual color of your product prior to installation.

Colors will vary from batch to batch.

Many of our products’ materials are not available through typical stores and vendors and therefore must be custom manufactured specifically for our use. In order to control costs and provide you with the best value possible, our raw materials are produced in large batches and can often take several months to receive. The colors of our materials can, and often do, vary slightly from batch to batch. Although we make every effort to minimize color variations, we cannot be responsible for these differences when they occur. If a precise color or specific shade is important, please inspect the actual color of your product prior to installation.

Color names are subjective and may not be what you think the color should be.

For example, we use the name “putty” to describe some of our products. Your idea of the color “putty” may be different than someone else’s idea of “putty”. In addition, products may have the same color name but may not be the exact same color. For example, we have different shades of “black”. Please do not order using color names as your only guide. If a precise color or specific shade is important, please inspect the actual color of your product prior to installation.

Inspect the actual color of your product prior to installation.

If it is important that your product be an exact color or shade, it is highly recommended that you inspect the actual product prior to its installation and address any concerns with your local independent installer. Most independent installers do not offer refunds or accept returns due to color variations.
