Peg Pole vs 1 Inch Pole : What’s the Difference?
If you are shopping for a removable mesh pool fence, you may notice that some systems use 1/2 Inch Peg Poles while others use traditional 1 Inch Poles.
Both styles are designed to create a strong removable child safety fence around a swimming pool, but there are a few important differences homeowners should understand before choosing a system.
The main differences between the two styles are:
- Hole size in the deck
- Pole construction and reinforcement
- Installation tools and drilling requirements
- Compatibility with certain fence styles and accessories
For most homeowners, the biggest deciding factors are hole size and installation preference.
First Things First
First and foremost, no matter which pole style you chose, you are receiving the strongest poles in the industry.
Our Recommendation for DIY Installers
If you’re installing a removable pool fence yourself, we generally recommend the 1/2 Inch Peg Pole System.
The smaller hole size is easier to drill, less noticeable when the fence is removed, and more forgiving for first-time installers.
The 1/2 Inch Peg Pole System is also the primary system supported by our DIY installation resources. We provide detailed installation guides, videos, measurement instructions, troubleshooting articles, and customer support specifically designed to help homeowners successfully install their own pool fence.
While 1 Inch Pole systems are commonly used in professional installations and offer excellent strength and rigidity, we do not currently provide the same level of DIY installation documentation and support for self-installation of 1 Inch Pole systems.
Both systems provide excellent strength and safety when properly installed, but for most homeowners installing their own removable pool fence, the 1/2 Inch Peg Pole System is the recommended choice and the most popular option among our DIY customers.
Hole Size Comparison
The most noticeable difference between Peg Pole and 1 Inch Pole systems is the size of the hole drilled into the deck.
- 1/2 Inch Peg Pole: Uses a 5/8″ hole and smaller deck sleeve.
- 1 Inch Pole: Uses a larger deck sleeve and hole.
Both systems use removable deck sleeves and matching plugs to cover the holes when the fence is removed.
| Feature | 1/2 Inch Peg Pole | 1 Inch Pole |
| Hole Size | Smaller (approx. dime) | Larger (approx. quarter) |
| DIY Installation | Easiest | More advanced |
| Installation Documentation | Full DIY guides, videos & support | Limited DIY documentation |
| Strength | Excellent | Excellent |
| Most Common User | DIY Homeowners | Professional Installers |
DIY Tip: If you’re installing the fence yourself, the 1/2 Inch Peg Pole system is typically the preferred choice due to the smaller hole size, simpler installation process, and extensive DIY support resources available from All-Safe.
Pole Strength & Reinforcement
Both systems exceed the strength requirements typically required for residential removable pool fencing applications.
The 1 Inch Twin I-Beam Pole provides maximum rigidity and is commonly selected for premium installations.
The 1/2 Inch Peg Pole system remains exceptionally strong while offering the advantage of smaller deck holes and easier installation.
Installation Differences
Peg Pole systems are commonly considered easier to install, especially for DIY homeowners.
Because the peg is smaller:
- Smaller holes are drilled
- Smaller sleeves are installed
- Easiest installation tools to source
Peg Pole systems are also the most common style used by many DIY’ers and competitors throughout the industry.
1 Inch Pole systems require larger sleeves and slightly different installation tooling, very common for professional installation and provide additional reinforcement through the full pole structure.
Fence Style & Accessory Compatibility
Some fence styles, gates, sleeves, and accessories are designed specifically for either Peg Pole or 1 Inch Pole systems.
If you are adding onto an existing fence, replacing sections, or ordering replacement parts, it is important to verify compatibility before purchasing.
Most components are NOT interchangeable between the two systems.
Which Pool Fence Pole Should You Choose?
Choose the 1/2 Inch Peg Pole if:
- You are installing the fence yourself
- You want the smallest possible holes
- You are replacing an existing Peg Pole fence
- You want the easiest installation experience
Choose the 1 Inch Pole if:
- You have access to a Wet Core Drill
- You are comfortable completing a more advanced installation
- You are matching an existing 1″ Pole system
- You prefer the reinforced Twin I-Beam design
For most DIY homeowners, the 1/2″ Peg Pole System is the recommended choice.
