On Saturday at about 6:15 pm, a 20-month-old boy in Tustin wandered out to his backyard and was found by his sister floating in the backyard pool. Later, at about 6:45 pm a 17-month-old girl in Placentia was found floating in a swimming pool during a family gathering. Both toddlers were rushed to the hospital by paramedics in critical condition.
In 2014, Orange County first-responders received 85 drowning calls, 41 of which were fatal. Almost a 50% fatal drowning rate. Orange County is one of the leading counties in the U.S. in terms of drowning incidents because of the great weather that we have year-round. A lot of near-drownings occur at the end of the day when parents are busy doing other things around the house. Drowning incidents are common but preventable. Children are curious and have a natural tendency to play in the water, but they don’t understand the consequences.
