Step Poles are extended-length pool fence poles used to manage steps, raised planters, pony walls, retaining walls, and other elevation changes that cannot be handled with a standard fence pole.
They are commonly used for a technique called flagging, in which the mesh extends from a lower elevation and attaches higher on a longer pole. This can eliminate the need to drill near the edge or bullnose of a step, where a hole may have inadequate clearance, leave a visible sleeve, or cause cracking and long-term damage.
Step Poles are available in 6-foot and 8-foot lengths and must be measured, cut, and fabricated to match the specific elevation change and fence layout.
Not every elevation change requires a Step Pole. In some installations, a 4-foot fence may only need a standard 5-foot fence pole to accommodate the change in height. You can purchase a standard pool fence pole —no Step Pole is needed.

Flagging requires modification of the mesh, molding, and pole assembly. Trim-to-fit and double-molding techniques may be needed to remove wrinkles and create a secure, finished transition.
For larger elevation changes, All-Safe offers an Angled Raised Panel, or ARP. This specialized panel has a sewn 45-degree transition that allows the fence to move between two elevations while maintaining tension and coverage.
ARP panels require careful measurement and layout. Please contact All-Safe before ordering if you are unsure whether your project requires a Step Pole, flagged panel, or ARP.
Step Poles are not a universal solution for every elevation change. Incorrect placement or fabrication can create excessive gaps, climbing opportunities, poor tension, or damage to the surrounding surface.
This is an advanced installation technique. Professional installation is recommended unless you have the tools and experience required to measure, cut, drill, and modify removable mesh pool fencing.
